Members list
« on: March 11, 2012, 09:09:34 pm »
We've had feedback from a substantial number of users about privacy concerns with the "Members list".

After review and consultation, we have decided to disable the "Members List", "Search Members" and display of "Who's online".

Those who wish to join up but are concerned about "retaliation" from you-know-who - we've heard you!

Whos on first?

How about different usernames between sites?

Just my first thought.

No problem with disabling the list different usernames just was my first thought for the paranoid.

There are several already but when they post identical threads both places it pretty well ruins their disguise.

retaliation is exactly the kind of thing that some Jerk Wad might do in a childish temper tantrum while looking for inappropriate youtubes to post on threads. Or not?

I just decided to move on as nothing will change and I don't have energy to waste fighting with idiots and the clueless.

Not so sure about disabling the list.

You don't hide the poster's name in posts....

I like the list around to sometimes dig up a name to send a PM etc.

If someone is worried about confidentiality etc, then choose a new nick?

Just my thoughts.

I find it more difficult to believe that you have to worry about a forum admin not liking that you are part of another forum..

But when your a long term member of a place, and have a lot invested into it, its heart renching to do anything that might screw it up. Even more so to see it go down the drain.

Norm;

Great. Glad you tagged along. A lot of old friends are here some using different names but after a few years of reading posts by a group you can tell who it is by how they write.

I tend to use a LOT of linefeeds and occasional punctuation to break up thoughts.

Others write one long line with no breaks or punctuation.

Its all good. I am a read only member on many forums because they keep some stuff hidden from non members. Photos, areas, etc. Everything from Aquaculture sites to Zombie Apocalypse preparedness forums and very few actually allow viewing the memberlist.  Some are quite the arse pain to sign up for, no throw away emails, tough captcha graphics to decipher and some even require a written by you request to join and "why".

I hope we can remain at the lower end of the scale. I don't really think blocking the list is bad. I don't think it is a big deal myself. Maybe show it but offer users an opt out of being shown  option but, somehow I doubt SMF has that built in.

Anyway I guess we really need to sort these details out.

Not many passionate pleas for either option so far?

Being one of the staff here I can see it anyway due to the boundless power invested in an admin.   :D :o 8)

Oddly,  FWIW, I haven't noticed any explicit retaliation from "elsewhere"... Doesn't mean it hasn't taken place, just means I haven't personally seen it. The "other" board seems too wrapped up in its own world to really notice a lot of what is going on over here.

What I have seen is gross incompetence in management and technical skills on the other aside... Lost photos, posts, etc. As to whether there are any actual malicious acts or just the raw incompetence, well, jury is still out on that.

As time goes on, I've lost about a quarter of my posts over the last 18 mos, and maybe more than that.

Are they being deleted out of incompetence?

If so, no retaliation. Personally, I'm not afraid... I'm not saying others shouldn't be. I for one don't care what they're doing over there... It won't affect you here attyy least.
Just my thoughts,  FWIW.
