Run Linux, and want silverlight sights to work (Like Netflix)

Follow this guide. ( there are many other ways to do this, but this is the most elegant in my opinion)

This works best in Firefox

A way to help opt out of targeted advertising.

http://www.aboutads.info/choices/

Its unclear if they still track you (likely) but they are not supposed to place ads that are based on this info

As of this writing, Microsoft Advertising opt out does not work. (no joke!)
<sarcasm>Wow, how shocking, a Micro$haft product that doesn't work.</sarcasm>

You can opt out of more than what if finds as current on your browser by looking at the tabs created in this page. Then select "Companies customizing ads for your browser" click the "select all shown", and if you wish un-select those you would like targeted ads from ( if any). Each browser you use will need this done, and each will have different companies. I am sure also in time more will be added for each, so check back on occasion.
I'm sure there are a lot more than this list, and there are other ways to minimise data mining, I'll post about later.
