Spring power stroke air compressor
« on: January 07, 2012, 11:04:18 am »
Someone on that 'other' site posted a long time back
that he had windpowered air compressors where the
power stroke was spring driven .....in other words it
was dependent on the pressure of the spring ....
for example if the spring could only compress a 100 pounds,
when the tank reached 100 psi. it wouldn't be able to
pump any higher. To avoid runaway it's connected to a
multi-bladed windmill that self-limits the speed.
Very interesting....but he never really went into much
detail.
How would I word something like this to do a search ?
Thanks for any help.

Wind driven air compressor "spring loaded"

air compressor turbine "spring loaded"

air compressor "spring driven" "wind powered"

The quotes make sure the 2 words show up together which keeps searches from returning just spring

Try each line by itself copy / paste

Never click the top link(s) they usually paid to get top ranked  and commercial selling something.

Just how I would start.

Good luck with it, buddy.

i may be wrong, but wasn't there a user by the name of MAC on the backshed.com that talked a lot about wind turbines running air pumps?  i don't think i ever saw anything from a working unit, but he sure seemed to talk much of it.  iirc i think he would modify existing air compressor pumps.

sounds like a good idea in theory.  a 500 gallon tank holding 100psi has some serious potential behind it!

I did do a very small air compressor out of one of those 12v car compressors connected via a sewing machine belt to an old fan from a car engine. Just like air brakes on a truck, pressure regulation worked by a simple release when over a certain limit. It did not last long, and was just a fun experiment. It was connected to a couple very old long evacuated propane tanks. I got quite a few tires pumped up from this setup.
I don't think i ever took any pics of that setup.
Trying to make power from alternative energy any which way I can.
Just to abuse what I make. (and run this site)

The neatest part about this system was that it only
pumped when the pressure dropped....even a couple
of pounds.....the rest of the time it would just be spinning
idle....no fear of it overspeeding as it would be self limiting.
(more talk on this if interest develops? ...I hope !)

G'day Norm,
Although this aint a spring powered wind driven air compressor it does use a couple of springs. For a bit of fun a while ago I decided with that old 2 stroke lawnmower motor that was stuffed to have a go at turning it into an air compressor. Silly me took the piston out and broke the rings putting them back in so I made some new rings and it did last for about 100 hours.

Now what I did was block up the exhaust port on the cylinder wall side then mount a Tee-piece in the spark plug hole. Using air fittings, a spring and a ball bearing for both the inlet and output ports as one way valves worked a treat. I think I still have it somewhere in my shed and if I can find it I'll take a pic to show what I did.

Regards Bryan

Hi folks,....This is of interest since I was considering using my artisen well to create pressure...
If it works for air ,...could it work for water as well??
The water will pump itself up out of the ground , about a foot into the air,.....with added force from a turbine ,maybe it could be made into something useful??..........I don't know ...maybe not..
just an idea.....artv

Check out this movie.  They build these mills down in Nicaragua to pump water with.  I like this kind of stuff because it takes true ingenuity to build something like this out of basically nothing.  They show the whole build in the movie:
Not a valid vimeo URL
It would seem to me that one of these things would run a piston-type air compressor perfectly fine too (with a few refinements).

Hey Chris!
Really liked the movie....they sure build 'em tuff down there....welding
handling all that bare metal no gloves...welding with open toed sandals.
I've never been able to saw a piece of pipe square in my life.
Where they cut the pipe and clamped on the outer bearing race....I've done
similar but I just use hose clamps.
I liked the way they hammer formed the curve in the blades.....hammer marks
in the blades yah hmph !  So what Huh?

This is something like I want to build but about half that size....
thanks again for the link was very entertaining !

There is an outfit on the intraweb somewhere that builds windmills that run air compressors, for some reason, I think they use em to aerate ponds or something.
I aint skeerd of nuthin....WTF was that?

Hey Chris, That video kind of makes one ashamed to depend on frequent trips to the hardware store but it reflects the "poor farmer/rancher" axiom I grew up with of "we have to make do with what we have".

My thoughts too Thurmond.
I particularly got a kick out of the way they formed
the blades a few hammer marks....but seemed like a good
heavy coat of paint covered them up pretty well....
reminds me of how I formed a snow plow blade for a two
wheel tractor once from 1/8 inch steel.....a 2x4 under one
side and run the wheel of the car the length of it.
Like you said ....make do with what you have.
Norm.
