Ginlong wind generators

I have been looking at the alternators on the Ginlong website. They seem to have a good reputation with the folks that have them. Does anyone here have experience with them? http://www.ginlong.com/wind-turbine-pmg-pma-permanent-magnet-generator-alternator.htm



Admin: I think this post could have easily been put in the DYI section since making a working turbine requires fabricating the rest of the mill. If you feel that another section would be more appropriate, please move it. Just my opinion from this side.Thanks.

not much help here ...but there are a couple of vids on utube of that ginlong type alt being dissambled ......its interesting in that you get to see the innards of the alt (bearings /housing/main shaft)...it does look beefier than some alts ...the big bearing caught my eye a bit ......i wonder how well they keep the elements out ......

a search on utube with ginlong will bring them up ......erm....i like to mute the sound on these type of vids sometimes .....utube can be a very weird place .....

Well, yesterday I happened to run into one of these generators ..... which on a remote island is unusual.

It was in the back of a friends car, he picked it up from the scrap yards in Melbourne. We have not had time to do anything serious with it yet, but it appears to be a well engineered product, heavy, and solidly built.

Beyond that I have nothing to offer, except that it looks the goods for sure.

I'd second that on scrap yards. The ones here will not sell anything. It's a one way street.
Please post what you find in the generator Oz. That would be interesting.

It will be some time before I get the chance to look inside the thing.

It's owner is a long ways from me at the moment (south part of the island)
It will turn up here when he wants to do something with it I assume, as I have the metal working gear..... until then I won't know.

Seems like I recall reading: the bearings are low grade China crap.
Users had very early bearing failures.
The consensus at the time was change the bearings to something high quality before flying one, then its a pretty decent item.

Also seems like some people thought the newer units were shipping with better china bearings?

some Chinese bearings do seem a bit iffy .....

i got a replacement set for a taper bearing hub a while back from the nearby farm shop  , and found out that their Chinese ..they were certainly cheap ...(but easily available  )

(on suggestion)... i washed them out with carb cleaner spray into a cup , and oddly there were some very fine iron fillings in there  (putting a neo on the cup side would show them up)...more like fine dust particles than any thing else , but unwelcome guests all the same

i repacked them and used them anyway ...time will tell

the ginlongs seem to have sealed bearings ......(no easy way to take a peek)

They make what the buyer tells them to make by the person who is buying the device.

From my own experience, I believe the people (who run the non-China company) go directly to a Chinese factory/supplier and ask for, roughly, "the cheapest item you can make that 50% will last 50% of the warranty period".  That is what they ordered, paid for, and receive.

Many China bearings have the 'China' name on them.
If Timkin made a custom batch of cheap bearings made of spitballs and bottle caps, they would not put 'Timkin' on them, right?

I have bought some Chinese bearings for hay wheel rake that had the 'one season rating'. They might have been rotated as fast as 20 RPM. The next season, I bought Seiko bearings. That was over 10 years ago. 

I go to my local bearing house and order bearings that are made in the US, Europe or Japan. You can get them with silicon seals that can be popped out with a small screwdriver without damage. Some bearings have a metal dust cover and not a seal. They are almost impossible to open them for examination.

Well with a couple ounces of magnets and a couple pounds of copper, I wouldn't drop a dime on it.

Not as yet.
He lives on the mainland some 300 miles away most of the time.
Not sure when he is coming back over here for his next sojourn.
