Finally - 11' Motor Conversion Flying
« on: July 26, 2017, 01:08:04 am »
I built this 3 phase 48 volt motor conversion quite some time ago (see classifieds post custom alternators) and finally completed the wind turbine. Tops out at about 300 lbs. 90' up and as alwys now waiting for decent wind for testing. Comercial slip ring assembly, manual and electric braking, custom controller with redundant auto shutdown. Supplimenting 7kw voltaic charging 1110 AH 48 volt LA  L-16's. As the days grow shorter and Fall and Winter winds pick up I plan for this to be very helpful. Updates to follow. Thanks BJ. I knew when I built it it would be more suited to maybe 14' blade set. I had these 11' and figured let it fly over the winter and get the bugs out then probably look into a larger set if all goes as planned. It takes about 10-12 mph to break past the cogging to start up then starts flying about 120 rpm pretty easy. Saw 600 watts in gusty 20 mph winds the other day into a nearly full battery bank. I'll be tweaking the controller and loading etc. but MPPT would be the best, I'm saving my pennies. More to follow, thanks for the reply. Dave B.  www.dcbenergy.com

Nice tower, I am amazed when i see designs like that withstand the elements. We had a storm this spring that clocked numbers above 100mph. I have a home built 5kw gen head and 13' blade but just afraid as soon as i put it up, itll come back down in an event. So far solar panels have been ok tuckd back next to trees. Your tower looks well built, Im sure its all in the supports and design, Good job!

The tower is a Rohn 55-G modified for tilt up, 4 way guys 16 total +2 additional from the center of the gin pole. Installed all new Rohn hardware when I aquired the tower 13 years ago. It was 140' with probabbly over a ton of comm. equipment hanging off it. Anchors are 6' x 10" wide web I beams, 4x4x4 deep concrete & rebar. Base is 4x4x4 concrete, rebar & 1"x 20 anchor bolts. If this tower ever comes down there will be much more to be concerned about. 3 tornados touched down here in Western NY a couple weeks ago, can happen anywhere. Dave B.
