Title: Coffee Can Savonius
Post by: Norm on March 30, 2014, 06:50:30 pm
Lot of these at my place....So why not?
Cut in half and top ends welded together,
Not too difficult with the nozzle of a Mini-Glue
gun ....Hi-Temp model ....no low temp cause
it doesn't get hot enough, soldering pencil gets
too hot unless you have a temp control, or plugging
in on and off continuously .  Pain....
Easier using a Hi-Temp gun .....slower but gives best
results IMO.
So here they are  the first of perhaps 2 or 3 stage .....
depending on the wind and the amount of torque needed
to overcome the cogging of my little stepper motors.
Would like it to be large enough to charge 6 volt NiCads 1.3
Amp/hr.

I'll put a second stage at 90 degrees to this one or a 3 stage at 120
degrees to each other .

Not a very clue view but I hope you get the idea.
BTW there will be a future view  of it here when I get it spinning.

Here is where I view as I watch from the front room window at
My projects .
Thanks for watching !

One stage wasn't enough wind to overcome cogging about 7 mph...
time to add another stage at 90 degrees to the first stage ....

cool norm.........
any pics with the motor hooked up ?  looks like you caught the wind gen bug..:}
soon you will have some 50 gallon drums flying around and around............and it never ends.............

No pics of the motor hooked up ....at the time I couldn't find an Allen
wrench to fit the set screw on the little rubber tired pulley...so I just
gobbed it on with some hot glue ....just a quick makeshift affair and since the
one stage wasn't enough I quite easily removed it .
I have since found my Allen wrenches and will be attaching a big washer that
I can attach to the RT pulley since Ghurd sent me about a 1/2 dozen of these
with a pulley with a rubber tire ( probably friction drive to a device like
the feed for a typewriter roll paper feed)
We had decided to call it a RT stepper motor : )
As soon as I make the second stage I'll have pics of it.
thanks for the reply .

So here it is 2 and 1/2 stages ( half a stage because the wood dowel wasn't
long enough for3)  ::)
Not sure what the wind speed is now but it was like in gust of 10-15 mph
plenty enough torque and rpm to turn the stepper RT and charge maybe 3.6or
4.8 v NiCads  (I hope)
( which I haven't installed yet )
The welded plastic joints are working terrific ! 100% penetration !

are right norm....
ive got a extra fanmotor conversion laying around if you would want to try that out..
i never did anything with them---should easly charge your batts at a low rpm..
looks like summer kicked in down their...hotter than you no what up here..hit 75 yesterday..its already past 70 today.
kinda funny biked past the local swimming hole yesterday--lots of people standing around in trunks and short sleves...
while the lake is still froze in.:}                later........

hiker....fan motor conversion sounds ideal for a low speed VAWT
and BTW how did the batteries for the cordless turn out ?

I didn't have any reinforcements where the tops and bottoms were joined
and a good wind and rain came along today and 2 of the cans came apart
so I now have reinforcement straps across and they will not come apart now .
Will put it back up with the stepper motor attached Monday or so and if my left
hip will stop acting up .

hey norm ..
warmed up here so ive been busy outside--great weather 70s...havent really messed with the batts yet have some copper sheeting i was going to cut in strips to use to connect the batts with..turned out i was using the wrong batt. charger on my batts..works fine now..but i will still build a spare batt. !!
i have two fan motor conversions---one stock wiring and one i tried for 12v wiring...i belive the 12v conversion should work for you still lights up a 2.5volt bulb at a slow turn...the stock alt turns  harder with just a small flashlight bulb..
but lights it up at  a slower rpm...the choice is yours.........?
