Title: New wind project?
Post by: Wolvenar on June 27, 2012, 10:56:17 pm
Seems I am about to acquire a new wind project courtesy of TomW

While troubleshooting forum problems I was offered a TDM and Jerry Blades as a "reward"

I sure can not turn down THAT kind of reward

Thank you Tom!

Got any Tom?

Very similar to this: photo I Googled up.

Just the motor, no flange or arbor.

It won't get it shipped until next month after the 4th.

Ahhh yes.  Wolv is stepping into a deeper form of his addiction. :o  He, I fear, has just crossed
the point of no return.  ;D
On a less serious note, I still have some stuff left from the 5 footer Wolv, let me know if I can help.

Yup, hooked.
I already am wondering what the specs are on the motor.

"Specs" on a TDM?   :o

Mostly, try it and see.

They made so many versions and sub-versions, and sub-sub-versions,
and some are stickered at full load, or no load, for the data on the sticker,
meaning about the only way to know is try it and see.

Example:  One website says they tested dozens and the 38V is great and amomg the best.  Another site tested dozens and the 38 (at least that particular 38) was "not good enough to bother typing the test results".

If you get really lucky, you might find some data for something with the exact same part number...

Has anyone seen these work for a 24 volt system?

If not I have ideas on how to make it work  ;)

I am not sure if this project will be a go or not.?

BTW in the meantime I'm waiting for you to send me details on the batteries
you need for replacement of your drill packs. A picture of what they look like
with the top off would help. I can do the whole procedure if you want or can send you
a kit a real basic kit. The only thingif I do it would cost you postage both ways
about $22 ....still not too bad for 2 packs ?
Further details as I post about replacing and such with NiCads.
As the er donations pour in I'm hoping to be able to make universal battery
pack to fit some drills.

They work on a 24 volt system I've done it with a PedGen....No Problem !
a few years back with a 30 volt Ametec forget what speed needed ...but I could
see even 60 watts was quite strenuous   Hmmm?
seriously the best way is to hook it up to say a 1HP electric motor with a ratio that
will spin it about 1000rpm and hook the TDM to 24 volt system.  It'll either stall or
be just about right and then adjust ratio accordingly..

variable speed ratio pulleys make it easy

Well, I am still working on getting this out. Parts assembled but no box suitable to hold the blades.

It will happen. Some day.

Well, I am still working on getting this out. Parts assembled but no box suitable to hold the blades.

Wrap them in paper. Send them registered and insured. Make sure the insurance is enough to buy new ones.

If they handle them like usual, they'll be broken by the careless gorillas called "delivery drivers", and you get to buy nice new ones with the insurance money.

However, as we all know, Murphy will step in about now... and because you WANT them to get broken, they'll arrive perfectly intact, not so much as  a scratch, shipped in nothing more than brown paper and packaging tape.

Murphy can't win when you set out to catch the b%&#(rd like that.

Wolv,

Are those blades the factory made, molded plastic type?
Or the type like PVC / ABS pipe?

These appear very much like factory made. TomW will know more of the particulars.

That's all I needed.  I know what they are.

(there were some concerns emailed to me about the mounting and the trailing edges, but it's all good the way you have it)

Any and all input is welcome.

These are bolted through, not screwed in, just in case anyone is wondering.

What is the concern about the trailing edges?

I'm still thinking I will makes a metal frame that matches the bolt holes and then reverse the blades on the wood so they will be backed on metal which attaches to the hub and have the wooden front. Possibly make a fancy pointed end even.

I don't think they are mounted on the hub right , those tabs
should be bolted onto the hub at angle of about 22 degrees ....just
guessing , so facing the mill it would be going clockwise....the way
you have it now it would be going counter-clockwise....seems that
ever one I've read about the root of the blade is at a good bit of an
angle and the tips are almost 0 degrees.

I may be wrong but hope someone sets us straight cause I got a set
just like that .....got 'em from Tom also.

Norm.
BTW ....have you found those cordless drill paks that you want the cells
replaced on ?

I made some time to figure out the mystery of the grinding TDM from TomW

Tom had mentioned he thought this had bad bearings, but ever since I got this I had a nagging feeling I have felt this kind of drag before. I had initially thought maybe it was brushes, but yesterday I found out.

This sounded/felt familiar because I had this very same thing happen on a treadmill motor I played with years ago.
Seems the bearings are fine, but to re-glue the mags presents me with a question.

Minnesota has very extreme temperature changes,( very fast at times)

I had fixed that treadmill motor once with JB weld, and it worked at least into one winter, but in use AS a motor.
Today I checked and the very same magnet is loose in that motor, its been almost 8 years however.
I have also used JB weld to fix severe pitting and damage in an ATV carb. This worked wondrous until winter. It seems the aluminum flexes to much with temperatures to hold up, I had nothing but JB weld dust and chips left when I took it apart.

So anyone have suggestions on what I can use to put this together? Winter is right around the corner here, I would hate for it to fail really early on.

It might sound stupid, but it's a genuine suggestion. Have you looked at *tile adhesive*?
Here's one we use: http://www.dunlopdiy.com/trade_resaflex.html

This stuff is incredibly strong/sticky but also retains some flex. Might be worth some investigation?

Yeah this seems like a great suggestion. Ross thank you
It might be a few days before I get to this again so I'll wait o see if any more suggestions are made before making a final call.

The factory adhesive may have had a bit of flex when new... but those motors are 3 decades old now.
