My mini turbine project
« on: July 25, 2012, 08:45:28 pm »
Hi all

I have got a mini turbine project going and thought I would start a thread to show the progress.

This is very much a learning project.

It will be a two blade machine with the two blades being milled from a single 2x4. Diameter will be 25". There will be a slight pitch change at the tips.

The rotor is made from plywood with cavities milled out for the magnets with magnet retainers made from some hard drawn copper. Retainers are being used for the time being so I can experiment with two different orientations.

Also there are some ferric sheet metal rings I have cut out that will attach to the back side for magnets to contact.

I have made parts in duplicate in case I mess up something, so I can have a back up. Looks like I just may end up with two turbines because so far all has gone well.

After I get the blades and rotors all done then I will start the stator builds.

Interesting design a kind of 2 step....I've thought of something like this..
only mine was 2 seperate blades with the short high speed blades
on round extensions past the tips of the shorter broad blades....yours might
work well or not unless it is a copy of a tried and true version....at any rate
it will give you an idea of where to go from there.....all fun.....Good Luck on
your project...
BTW Wouldn't mind having your drill press. :)

Neat job with the blades.

The final version will not have the 'retainers' in there, will it?
They are taking up valuable air gap space, and may have a bit of minor eddy current issues.

Thanks Norm

I would be lost in the shop without my drillpress so you will have find your own sorry. :)

Your are right on both counts there, air gap and eddy currents.

I have been reconsidering the use of retainers.
