Title: new mill up and flying
Post by: shawn on March 06, 2012, 07:33:46 pm
This mill has taken me ages but here it is a quick description, 4 meter chainsaw blades, 9 coil 24 magnet N52 grade , adjustable mast offset , sliprings, adjustable tail length, and the tilt up tower is at 12 meters but I can wind it up to 20 meters (telescope lattice)

very nice ..:)

lots of adjustable things and the stator mounts look nice and "beefy" too....

Looks like nice work! Do you have any performance info yet?

Shawn,
Very nice work and something to really be proud of. Envy the telescoping tower!!
Make sure you post some results of the project. 4 meters, what are you supplying with this WT?
Good luck and hope to see more in future.
Bill

No performance info yet it went up for the first time about 3 hours ago in very light wind 3/4 mph its spinning fine but minimal power made if any.
Homemade controler all done just need to finish the dumpload and wire it up, it will tell me rpm, watts, and log power into and out of my bank.

Homemade controler but not at my home, as i also live in the  land down under so its a    (fracken)    good controler

I'de love to know more about your controller

Candy to the eyes there Shawn, some beautiful work!

This is the debut of Robins' new controller? Looking forward to the beta testing  :)

That's a sharp looking brush and slip-ring Assembly, Homemade?

Thanks for the look, More Pics Please! 8)
Cheers, Dave

I'de love to know more about your controller

That would be down to me then   ;)
Starting from an Atmel Butterfly demo board and a couple of Dallas 1-wire chips its a controller and logger. Handles a dump load using a PWM signal to 'ease' the load on as the voltage rises and remote switches an inverter.

The measurement side handles volts, current, (hence power), temperature, dump load, inverter status, maximum power in the last hour and day, state of charge, generator RPM and reports it all on the built in LCD display, outputs it to a serial port and stores it in dataflash once a minute for later serial download (about 2 weeks worth).

Just finished an update to the website with the final schematic and PCB designs and the latest version of the software.

You can find the info here http://gilks.ath.cx/~g8ecj/New_Turbine/new_controller.html (http://gilks.ath.cx/~g8ecj/New_Turbine/new_controller.html) - enjoy   ;D

This is the debut of Robins' new controller? Looking forward to the beta testing  :)

I've been Alpha testing the controller here for a few weeks now and been ironing out a few bugs. Its now totally run my system for a week. Some good winds today (southerly that Shawn doesn't see at his place in the hills) which tested the inverter and dump load control quite nicely :) The performance info is at http://gilks.ath.cx/cacti/graph_view.php?action=tree&tree_id=3 (http://gilks.ath.cx/cacti/graph_view.php?action=tree&tree_id=3) Had a few dropouts of the comms link across the paddock but I'm sure you get the idea!!

Nice thank you Frackers, I am looking at a lot of options to do these things.

I hope to be really busy building this summer, so I'm eating up all these newer ideas that are less explored on the "other" forum

Thanks Robin there is no way I could explain that and do it justice  :-[
Dave yes homemade sliprings  around my bolt on car mmmm here is some pictures to explain

G'day Shawn,
Well it was well worth the wait to see this thing up and flying mate and it does look a treat too, now just remember when you take the tower down TO DO IT PROPERLY next time (hehehehehehehe)

Cheers Bryan

Nice looking machine... and set up...... and I always get a kick out of seeing some more chainsawn blades... any pics of them closer up.?

I'm thinking everyone else makes them better than I did :o

Robin,
Thanks for that added info. This is a great project, way beyond my abilities but a thrill to read about your adventures with a few bits making some sense..still a lot going over my head.

That's 'another' benefit I find in the forums .. the experience of other peoples
great projects prodding me to investagate things I have very little knowledge of.

I have got to get involved in the micro controller world  :-[

Is that your weather data too? (on the other graph pages) Nice set up! And more feelings of "I wish I could do that" ...Ouch, more stick poking  ;)

Shawn,
Thanks for the Pics of the slip ring setup and spindle..looking good!

Cheers, Dave

Thanks Shawn..... ( almost teary eyed seeing a chainsaw half way up a blade)

Nice work, looks like you have gone for lots of torque.... hope the alt is up to it.

My first set were a bit more dainty and faster (less cord, and less pitch), but my second set look similar to yours..... slower and more torque.

I cant imagine doing 4 meter blades any other way.

I have seen the slower blades pulling 60 amps@58v into batteries..... but that was not meant to happen ;D I don't let them do that now... (testing is fun but I don't think the stator was so amused).

Nice job..............oztules

yes the way to go when building blades!! :)
With the torque into my alt ermmm not sure you might know better :-[
the neos are 15mm thick / 50mm discs N52 x 24
the coils are 42 turns of 1.6mm wire two in hand x 9 star wired
magnet gap of 20mm
cutin at 25 volt DC @ 130 rpm
hope it all works out I do have more wire here and the mold is still good

When the wind blows...... something is bound to happen with all that magnet, copper and airfoil :D

Hasn't the wind turned up yet?....  cursed wind gods.....

Good to see some figures when it does.

You have enough magnet to stop it in it's tracks if you need to ...... and thats a good thing while your tuning the furling.

The wind gods sorted there stuff out and gave me some
best I saw was 50 amps at 26 volt with no furling yet! not enough wind for furling just now it does fold up A little when the wind changes direction pushing against the tail then unfolding.
It seemed to like sitting around 30 amps with A little humm or rumble out of the alt and small rattle in the tower.
Better results will be here when my controller is on which should happen this week.
I can see some small changes to the tail to make it face the wind better this can wait though.
So far im very happy with it. :)

That hum is the electrons being herded down the wire. I can hear it outside at the house yard about 400 feet away. Just my way of knowing power is being made.

It seems that most (all) the pipe on pipe yaw and tail bearings have a rattle as things get moved around. Unless it is really loud or constant I just figure it is part of the sound of work being done. As things wear in the rattle may just go away.

Glad its up and working. It is hard to beat the feeling of seeing a plan like this come together. Especially on time and on budget.

Thanks for the share!

Tom

Thanks Tomw
Im ok with the hum like you said its work being done.
the rattle in the tower is one half of the lattice inside the other half the rattle will go away when I extend it.
The yaw bearing is a toyota rear  car hub (ball bearing) so no slop pipe on pipe, the tail hinge was solid rod turned down on the lathe very heavy but strong and no rattles there.

Nice to see some power turn up at last. Good result. Skipping  along at 1300 watts is not too shabby at all, and happily running at a horse power or so is cool too.

Nice to hear the blades develop something. What is their noise level like. I find mine make almost no sound side on, and a very mild sound face on.... unless they wind right up, then it is a guess if the blades make as much noise as the three phase rumble through the ground at higher power levels.

Will look out for more updates if they should come.
