Cold weather is back in Minnesota
« on: January 23, 2013, 10:00:46 am »
We have been seeing temps here that are approaching -30F the last couple weeks, with windchill that's sometimes colder than -100F.

This is still not the weather we used to see, (-50 or so) but its significant compared to the recent trend.
We are in for another round after a short warm up, but it doesn't so far appear as bad.
We may see low windchill temps, but the actual temps are not as low this time around.

Windchill only makes a difference on anything that's holding or creating heat, it makes things cool down faster.
It does not affect the actual temperature, just how much and how fast heat is robbed..

its a bit warm here anch. ak--nice change from the below zero weather we had a while  back !

Both you guys need to move your solar panels a lot farther south, then put your house next to them.

-40 degrees is WAY too cold, and I don't care if that is -40C or -40F.
At -40 it doesn't matter if you speak English or metric, too cold is too cold.

I'm down on the far side of the ring road seen at the 4 o'clock portion of that map...

...and we are told since this portion of the State has dirt/ground exposed many places, ie: lacking at least a foot of snow, our temperatures are 10-15°F warmer than they should be.

I looked last night for a webcam of the Mississippi River around here but they are geared toward springtime melt floods. The drought plus ice-lock-up has made it low, low, low.

http://webcams.ci.stpaul.mn.us/webcams/CityHallCam/cityhall.jpg  (or http://www.stpaul.gov/index.aspx?NID=4592) has one or two river pictures out of a slideshow, keep refreshing to see them. the rap rock covered bank shows little evidence how low the water is except looking like a stadium bleacher. The land shown above the huge rock covered bank mostly never floods, the rivers' flood stage is above 14', record is just shy of 19' and the river is current at 3'...

Well it may be artic weather over there but here we are in full summer and the forecast for the week to 2 weeks is no higher than 25C with no sign of rain either. It may well pay out like when we bought the farm 10 years ago when I came from on a break from the Telfer mine where average temps were above 50C I had the fire going in summer, so with this cold snap I won't be surprised if I'm out cutting firewood.....

Cheers Bryan

Just a thought, since I got my new exercycle.....it has arms connected to the
pedals....watching them go back and forth....someday could hook one up to a
saw and saw wood while I was pedaling save on gas that you would use for a
chainsaw.....
Norm. :)

Well it's Saturday afternoon here in Hong Kong and as I write its a nice 24 degrees Celsius.

Long jeans and a T shirt weather!

Don't even think of sending me snow or cold weather.

Not quite Minnesota, but close enough for the average bear.

Five minutes of perspective adjustment from things not man-sized.

The things you run into plowing for people.
I pulled 3 out of the ditch, while plowing nearly the entire way to town, as none of the small roads were plowed.

This was on my way home, my truck is the one on the right of the pic, still in the game.

1938-0

18 inches of a combination of wet heavy, and light drifting layered snow in under 24 hours at my house.

Some places are drifted bad, when i went out the the truck snow drifted from a little hill behind it to level into the back.

Also one of the very old buildings we had here ( not much value ) was crushed under the snow as well.
Thankfully nothing inside was worth to much either.

Unfortunately a friends house was also crushed by the snow.
He and his wife are snowbird type people, and in Georgia now so at least no one was hurt.
