Friday the 13th
« on: April 12, 2012, 08:05:05 am »
Hi all,

Last Friday was a 13' rotor going up for its maiden voyage.

My little baby is growing up and turning into quite a good worker!

She put out power just about constantly for about 3 days with not very noticeable winds.
I checked the closest weather station for wind data last weekend and 10 - 15 mph was all.

This is how they start out at my place.  Just babies.

Looks very much along the lines of an Exmork as far as the nose cone and blades --  Nice clear wind area , you must be happy with that nice tower ,looks very strong . Pls tell us a bit (u probably allready have) about the gennie and your controller, batts ,,Etc

 Thanks

97fishmt,
pretty, ---Good on ya!  Took some work I'll bet, party after?
Let us know the difference in performance. I assume the Servos the same?

Well I'm the servo motor guy, I'm sure you have heard of me.

These are blades from cms magnetics, I just couldn't pass up the deal ($200 or so).

It was just a swap out of props again, no work just the same old routine of putting
up the tower when I get there.  This blade assembly is very heavy though,  I'm still
trying to get motivated  to carve a large set (15'- 16'?) out of cedar.

The generator puts out 25 volts at 120 rpm and is good for a couple hundred amps.
(rated at 80 amps with a maximum of 360 amps!)

The tower took the new set of blades just fine, but to go bigger I'll have to put a new
section on top to allow for more clearance to the guy wires (I'm working on it).

This was just another cabin trip of a couple days, not enough wind to see it sing.

The party is today the 14th (my birthday) 46 today.

Cheers.

Mike

Mike ----   HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!

Ya we've talked before and I recieved good advice from you on "removing brakes from Servo's"
Can't wait to hear your results with the new rotor. Have bought a 9.2' CMS Rotor Assy. too.

Happy Bithday!

Maybe its too soon to tell, but do you think it would improve with a larger set of blades?

I'm thinking longer blades will be slower (higher wind for cut in), and the set thats on there now may not have any stall issues with a reactive core (servo motor).

Wondering if you won't get more 'usable' power from a set that makes output over 3 days of "not very noticable wind" than from a larger set that maybe puts a far larger percentage of the power to a dump load.
.
Its just a tad bit larger than my motors.
OK, you got me...  Its huge compared to my motors!

Thanks gents.

Yea I know ghurd,  I like the way my little mills work.  They spin up fast and then just trickle charge the battery bank.

This is a monster of a motor and I'll of course try to see what it can do.  It's always been very safe by furling early.
I did get to see it start to partially furl at only a tad over 15 amps.  it's time to add weight to the tail now.

Looking at the blade calculators I know its about the limit with the 13'er and the 120 rpm cut-in,  but with my winds I'm
more interested in the lite winds I get more often than when the storms come through.

I was impressed getting up in the middle of the night and looking at the c-40 remote meter and it saying 30 volts and dumping
15 amps.

I built a 1500 watt resistor set-up for a dump load before putting up this motor so I'm ready for at least what the c-40 can do.

But the last big motor I had up for the 12 volt system I was pushing two c-40's to there limit dumping around 100 amps.  That's
getting kind of scary.  I'd be running around checking if anything was getting hot or looking to see if it was furling or checking the
tower out.

I'm just hooked that's all.  I'm planning on putting up another tower further away from the house and it would be nice to just have
a few little mills going that can't get into too much trouble, but it's all in swept area of the rotor, so we'll see.  I have to put some of
these motors I've been collecting over the years into service.

Cheers :)

Mike
