As far as I know, all burned up ECMs were burned up when used for their designed purpose, as a (servo) motor, and only when the controller failed to a condition sending 100%DC duty cycle to a phase. (best guess)

Yes, I had to look up antipodes too.  :(

   My guess is that the Wikipedia page on antipodes has been a little busier of late.
