Title: Converting Flat-Screen TV into a Lighting Fixture
Post by: WooferHound on September 21, 2015, 04:00:31 pm
I decided to make an old 32" flat-screen TV into a lighting fixture. A TV is mainly a light-source with a picture panel that opens up pixels to be the color that is needed. The picture panel on this TV was broken so I removed it and plugged it into power. It lit right up and after a couple of minutes increased to a very bright light. It's colored slightly Lavender compared to Sunlight, but the quality of color was better than any other light in the house. Problem is that, after 10 minutes it turns itself off, probably because it has No Signal. There are only 3 PCBoards in it. One appears to do all the input and tuner functions, one looks like it operates the video panel itself, and the last card looks like transformers for the CCFL light tubes.

Can't decide if I'm keeping it or throwing it away?

Might make a great light over a workbench?  The auto-shutdown feature is a pain,
but can probably be defeated.
Seems like one of those things begging to be re-purposed.

You may be better off economically selling off the boards in that set.
Depending on the model, interchangeability, and rarity they can fetch a good $ on ebay.

Then again, if you still wish the project...
Use this $ to buy some simple inverters and wire them up.
Fixes the timer off problem.

You may be able to break even, or possibly gain a couple $.
You also get the satisfaction that it made someone else's tv work with the boards you sell.

All dependant on your skill and if you want to put the time into it.
