wiring two charge controllers in series
« on: April 05, 2016, 08:59:56 pm »
hello,

what to switch from 24 volt system to a 48 volt , i have two c60 24volts/60amps charge controllers and i was just wondering if they
could be wired in series for the 48 volt batteries.

thanks,
billy

Actually, that just might work fine as long as the two charge controllers have their own isolated panels feeding them and each has its own 24v bank of batteries. You could then connect one plus and 1 minus from each bank togrther and use the remaining plus and minus for your 48v output to inverter etc., thats kinda neat, the system would self balance even better than the typical 48v install!
(you would need same number of panels on each controller) at same tilt angle no shading. In other words energy input needs to be balanced and it wouldnt hurt to put a min voltage monitor on each 24v bank in case one runs low before the other. Otherwise it sounds like a winner! ;D

Lighthunter,

Thanks for the reply, yes I thought it might work but wasn't sure, saves me buying new controllers, I was thinking of building my own
controller but can't find any schematics for a 48 volt 60 + amps controller.

When I get around to doing this , I'll let ya know how I made out.

Could build mine (ghurd controller) for 48v 60A.
That's a lot of power, meaning a lot of battery, for a single stage.
And a lot of battery with 2 controllers might have equalization issues.
