Best places to get heavy wire.

(1/2) > >>

Rover:
I routinely can't find good prices on 6 AWG or larger copper wire. Typically I end going to West Marine, and getting it there. Getting a little tired of bending over at the cash register and uttering "thank you may I have another".

I mean it is great wire , and I use it on my boats , but I don't need fully tinned marine grade.

Where do other people get wire ? Not a box store, unless you like being frustrated and having clerks that might have a seizure at your request,

(edit... this is for stranded, not solid)

Have you tired a welding supply store?

Automotive parts supplier?

ghurd:
Places that deal with semi-trucks sometimes have some serious wire.
Ma & Pa places may be willing to cut a deal since they price it expecting to sell it in 4' pieces instead of X' foot pieces.

Here, a transportation hub, the local NAPA deals in mostly semi-truck parts, and they have big spools of big wire.
But they also get ~ $10 for a 20' coil of yellow single-conductor #18, which I know because sometimes I need it badly.  :'(

I buy all that kind of stuff at a local auto parts store.  They are, fairly unique in that they
are not affiliated with any chain, and have a very extensive supplier list.

Rover:
Yeah, none of the auto shop around here sell it by the foot, it all prelugged.
