Title: Cold ....Wet..Sad day

Yep that was Nellie ....small Doberman.
Got up this morning and she was lost ...disoriented
as happened every once in awhile ...would put a little syrup
in her water and that usually snapped her out of it....but not this
time....she loved to eat didn't want to this time...she was diabetic
so we thought well maybe give her her shot an hour early.....
but she didn't want her food.....shortly therafter she had a seizure
.....settled down then had another.....she had developed cataracks
and could no longer see walking around running into stuff.....
no longer an enjoyable life for our friend....or us .

The vet isn't always at his office especially on Saturdays....but today
he was ....so he put her to sleep ...she is at rest alongside her Mom
and Dad....17 years ....9 of her best years with us.

Sure will miss her......
Norm.

Sorry to hear that. We have several Family pets and it is always a sad day when one goes on to a better place.

Condolences, Norm. :-\

I like to think of it this way tho - It beats at least one alternative - I would rather have to put 10 pets down than have to worry about whether they make it to a good home when it comes time for ME to go down. Takes a lot of trust to do that.

Sorry for your loss, Norm.

A good dog is hard to beat for a pal. Always there for you. Sad when they have to go.

The choice to put them down so they don't suffer is a hard one but the right one.

Been there a coupile times myself.  :( The worst was crippling hip displasia in a 17 year old  Chocolate Lab which is very old for a Lab. I had Bo from the time he would fit in a coffee mug being the runt of the litter and couldn't compete for a tit so I took him and hand fed him with milk replacer for calves. I still miss him, 25 years later!

I fed him some Seconol and we went for a last walk in the woods when it kicked in  where I fed him some hamburger and shot him in the head with my Ruger Single Six revolver while he was eating it and buried him on the spot. That was a hard thing to do but I couldn't have someone else do it. I still return to that spot occasionally to talk to him. Weird, I know.

I feel for you, Norm but you have the memories to carry on the memories.

Tom

I hear you Steve.....

Niall, for Nellie the magic words were..."Wanna go out?"
What wonderous adventures she must have had just smelling
with her nose even after her sight went.....

Ah Tom, not weird....he's still around in spirit.....

I could swear I heard Nellie with her little whine wanting
a drink of water today......

Thanks Guys,
Norm.

The choice to put them down so they don't suffer is a hard one but the right one.

The worst part of that is making the decision too late.
Our old mate, Buster, a real gentleman German Shepard, was pretty good up to the last. He was suddenly off his food, obviously in discomfort. Vet diagnosed him with an aggressive cancer. Next day he was doing very poorly, gave us the look - that says "Sorry guys, this just isn't working... help me out". Called the vet who came very quickly - about half an hour later there was a knock on the door and he had a covered tray with what he needed. He was about 5 minutes too late, Buster couldn't wait and had gone on ahead.

Still miss that guy. Not quite as long ago as your mate, Tom - but 17 years ago now.

sorry for your loss norm.........................
my dogs are still with me when i hike in the mountains....even thou their no longer earthbound..
and of all things--every once in a great while my wife and i will hear a chirp from are parekett
that passed on years ago..yeah that bird was something --got loose outside 5 or 6 times..the only way i could find her was to let out a single whistle--then she would answer back with a single whistle.
thats the way i would track her down--neigbors most likely thought i was nuts...had to climb on top of neigborhood houses--climb trees............but it worked -got her back each time..sad to say i cant get her back where shes at now--she still lets out that single whistle-- sometimes its far away and at other times up close..wanting me to go and find her!!
sorry norm didnt mean to ramble on--but i really do know how you feel--once again im sorry for your loss.............hiker.

Very sorry to hear that Norm.
Those things that remind you of her will last a long time.

When I was on the computer, mine would whine at my right foot.  That meant I had to put one of my insulated flannel shirts down for her to lay on.  She liked the green one best, and if it was hanging on a chair where she could see it, no other would do.  We buried her in it 3 years ago.
I still look down at that spot everyday, half expecting her to be there.

Yeah...she's still around.
Nellie's favorite little flannel blanket, when she was ready for
bed she stood at the old green recliner but wouldn't jump up in it
until I picked the blanket up where she could see it was out of her
way then she would jump up and lay her head up on the wide soft,
low armrest toward us, then wait for me to cover her up all but her
head. Then lay there looking at us for a while before she went to sleep.

Thanks Glen.

Norm,

I've always thought that you can learn what you need to know about a person by how they treat their dog. And I can tell you are a good guy. To me, dogs are a being, just like you and I. They have likes, dislikes, hopes and dreams. So when they go, the loss is intense. I am still sad about my last dog-friend, and that was almost 5 years ago. I always said that if I could teach her to brush her teeth I'd marry her.

I'm really sorry.

Jonathan

Johnathon....I think so....just by the replys I know there are a lot of
good guys out there.

As one guy said to his son when asked about the loss of their pet,
"Dad... why does it hurt so?"
" That's the price of Love, son ....."

Been away for a few days Norm, you've lost a friend, and that is a tough thing to lose.
My sympathies won't help much, but you have them anyway.

I had the same problem with my 15 year old dog
He would not eat and could not get up on his feet
Two days ago I had him put to sleep (killed)
I think I did the right thing because he was so lethargic
and not having any quality of life
I hated it and made an appointment to have him put to sleep
Thought It wasn't going to be so bad, but It really got to me emotionally
It's been 2 days now and I find so many things that I did for that dog

due to scheduling, I had to dig his grave site before he was dead, he was even watching me
was a very bad day for me . . .
I still want to feed him everyday

Yeah ....she used to go out with me every day to get the paper
every morning.....she still does ...I can almost see her going on ahead
stopping to smell the scent of some animal that must have been
there the night before and amusing when she got that nature call.....
frantically searching for that special place it still makes me smile....
ya know?
So I can imagine how you feel ....sorry for your loss also.

So now I'm dogless for the first time in 20 years. I had 3 dogs for awhile but they have been going away at a steady rate. but now I don't have any pets. it really feels funny around dark time when I would feed them.

she eagerly awaited cause then ....chow time !
Now 8 o'clock comes and goes.....
