Pattern Craftsman 14.4 cordless drill pak.

This is the first step, these tab on one end need to be marked with a permanent
marker on the bottom end to indicate which direction the unfolded tab will be positioned.

2nd step is to unfold the tabs that will be on the bottom and place them in the bottom
of the cell pack as shown.
Once placed like the above a touch of solder paste flux should be placed on all negative
ends of the cans that are showing then a light touch of solder just enough to tin it
with (I use a 40 watt Weller pencil type )solder pencil.
after that lightly tin the underneath sides of the tabs (showing face up before unfolding)
then starting with 3 fold the tab down and over the next in line tinned negative press it
down almost touching for a second allowing the solder on the underneath side of the tab
to preheat and melt for an instant ....now press the tab down onto the neg. tinned spot
firmly ...it only takes a second....then rock the soldering pencil on it's side so just the sharp edge is pressing ......Continue on each by the number when finished remove from case and solder the tabs on bottom.
Attach the top cell AFTER applying 2 or 3 strips on the top of the cells most
important to put the small insulated piece on the bottom of the top cell to prevent
shorting.
If the top cell needs replacing the 2 spot weld can be drilled out and the replacement
cell can be soldered in replacing also the old sensor leads and reinstalling.

Well actually this should have been step 2 ...but this must be really done precisely
making sure these cells are wedged tightly to the middle keep checking and wedging
in until the top fits on like it did originally

Good Luck !
Norm. :)

This is the first time I thought about marking them .

Okay.  Here is another suggestion, I had  about 4 or 5 bad
cases so I carefully cut along a line by design about a 1/4 inch
from the bottom.....but on second thought it might have been
better if I had used a 2" hole saw and carefully cut 2 overlapping
holes so as not to weaken the sides now with that done you would
be certain that the tabs were lined up exactly.

Remember to start with the top battery and line it up with the ones
already in place....I make a little cardboard template so the tab of
second battery lines up with the top battery's tab hanging down to
meet it, as you go along, check to see that the top fits after you
solder each tab , it might seem picky at the time ....but if you don't...
remember Murphy's  law is always right there waiting for you  :)
and you'll be wondering which one it is that you goofed  :o
You won't have to tape the sensor/s against the battery just a small
sliver of cardboard or wood the make it snug against the battery will do.
A few strips of masking tape on the top of the battery s will be enough.
and you're done .

Once it's charged up real good ...I don't charge them until they get down
to at least 12 ? volts  if or when they don't seem to be lasting as long as they
did at first ....so of course run them down real low and check ....never know
sometimes one that seemed to be good could be faking it ....I had one and
running it down to about 8 volts and then it suddenly went dead ....but when I
checked each one ...they seemed to be like .8 volt but then one was .000
....so replaced it and gave them a long slow charge to equalize them and now
works as good as original.....only takes one to screw up 11 other Good ones !
Okay nuff of a rant! done for now .....

Let me know when you get them anxious to hear from you .

 update
a better way to do it

as before you take 5 of the cells and remove the tabs from the positive terminals
and make 5 pairs by gluing them side by side .....when finished you solder the tabs to the negative terminals.

as such on one end of the pair

and the other end will look like this
2897-3
next placing them in order
once you have them placed into the container
using cardboard wedges to assure the top fits on
you will be finished with the bottom tabs all connected
then placing the tabs you removed connect the b group
to the c group ...c group to d group etc, making sure after you connect
each group that the top will still fit down .....if not you drive another
cardboard wedge in then apply hot iron to the soldered joint allowing
the solder to remelt so it will shift over.
when you have them all connected the next to final connection of the tabs will look like this
2899-4
the final connection is connecting the bottom of the top cell to the top of the
cell of group b (b1_

so it's getting late and just recovering from a cold....
any questions and I will attempt to answer them.

i saved the page to my pc norm..........
Hope you saved the update to it also before you started on them
having them made up into pairs so the bottom is already set ......
simplifies things .....sorry about that I could have done that for you.
First chance I had to rewrite that as I had been coming down with a cold,
been a long time since I've had one that lasted that long others have been
like an overnight thing more of an allergy thing .
Norm.
Hope I have a satisfied customer.

Hah! Not talking to me when you say garlic  :o
Got my wife's vote tho' especially likes croutons with garlic...
goes in her soup ...salads etc. snacks  ::)

once you get the knack of taking those tabs off the rest is
downhill !
  I use a pair of diagonals .....
lift the tab up as far as you can
and wedge the edge of the jaw as close as you can up to spot welds
on the long side of the tab and lift-rock a little bit and get another
closer grip until its pulled up thru the spot welds  :  like that not <0
then turn around and pry up the other side :] each corner and lift up each corner
when done right the tab will look like this     [: :  ::  ]     a pair of needlenose
to flatten out the wrinkles
I sent your batteries the same day as I did Tom's he got his about a week ago .....Hmmm
well let me know when ya get em
.....Ya .... I worry too much  :)
